Chapter 9

As the winds grew stronger, Oren found shelter in a building near the tent in which he’d received treatment, chewing on a half-eaten cheese sandwich he found on the entrance floor. His shame was not as tormenting as his stomach’s demands and the sprouting signs of fatigue. He was so depleted that even something as simple as chewing required considerable effort. Oren was thinking about how that holy day is also his own special day. What a poor way to mark the beginning of the fourth decade of his life.

Despite his complete physical exhaustion, his mind still refused to let go. What should he do now that he has admitted the failure of his private mission in Jaffa?

Oren decided that it would be best if he turned himself into the police and told them the truth. He thought they would probably believe him, despite his questionable past. Though he would have to disclose the details of his relationship with Christina, at least that way, he wouldn’t have to run away from them anymore. At most, he would spend a brief time in prison for escaping the prison guards who’d escorted him to court. He didn’t think that would happen either as he was convinced that the station commander who interrogated him, Hannah Feldman, thought well of him, despite the flood of accusations she hurled at him during his short interrogation.

But before he turns a new leaf, he must solve one last mystery that won’t let go of his thoughts. What exactly is the nature of the relationship between Christina and Khaled? Under what circumstances did he kidnap and torture her?

He recalled that Christina had once told him that many of her patients were famous, some even notorious. Was Khaled Christina’s patient? That would certainly make sense. Khaled’s treatment may not have been successful either, but his reaction was completely different from Oren’s – truly destructive.

There is only one person in the world he can talk to about this. Oren felt excited about the new goal he had set for himself.

The first morning of the war broke out accompanied by a terrible lightning storm, torrential rain, and tremendous winds, the likes of which Jaffa had never known. Winter started with a bang. A surprise visit by a rare guest covered the deserted streets with a soft white blanket.

It was a restless night for the man who wanted to save the city from its occupiers and turn it into the capital of the rebel cities. In the hours that passed, as if immortalizing every second of that historic night, Khaled spent staring continuously at the white city, through the large window in his office. Ignoring the sounds of explosions, he gazed at the pastoral sight with excitement. It was the most relaxing and spectacular thing he had ever seen, as if completely detached from the aggressive reality.

When the utopian imagery faded, he returned to face the real world, this time with renewed strength.
